File Description: This information sheet provides readers with an overview of Access Alliance - who we are, what we are doing, why we are doing it and when we plan to be finished.

Access Alliance is undertaking a significant project to upgrade sections of the Great Northern Highway in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt Region as part of Main Roads’ overall upgrade program.

Great Northern Highway is a major service corridor for the agricultural, pastoral and mining industries. It is part of the AusLink National Network linking Perth with Darwin and often carrys over-size loads such as mining machinery.

Sections of the Highway between Muchea and Bindi Bindi are inadequate for current and future traffic volumes, with many sections being narrrow, with a winding geometry and low visibility crests. Other safety issues include poor pavement condition, limited overtaking opportunities and in some places large trees dangerously close to the traffic lanes.

These issues make it hazardous for the many trucks carrying stock and goods between Perth and locations to the north, particularly the resource sector in the Pilbara region.

The Australian Commonwealth Government and the Western Australian State Government have committed approximately $100 million to undertake the upgrade works which will greatly improve the safety and efficiency of the Highway.
