Great Northern Highway is a major service corridor for the agricultural, pastoral and mining industries. It is part of the AusLink National Network linking Perth with Darwin and is a classified Heavy Haulage and Wide/High Route often carrying over-size loads such as mining machinery.
Sections of the Highway between Muchea and Wubin are inadequate for current and future traffic volumes. Many sections have a nominal sealed width of only 6.2 metres, winding geometry, low visibility, crests, worn surfaces and poor pavement condition, limited overtaking opportunities and in some places, sharp drop-offs at the road edge, along with large trees dangerously close to the traffic lanes. This makes it hazardous for the many trucks carrying stock and goods between Perth and locations to the north, particularly the resource sector in the Pilbara region.
The Australian Commonwealth Government and the Wetern Australian State Government have committed approximately $100 million to undertake the upgrade works which will greatly improve the safety and efficiency of the Highway. Works will be undertaken between December 2007 and March 2010.
